What is Internal Family Systems (IFS)?

A therapeutic model that views the mind as composed of sub-personalities ('parts') — managers, firefighters, and exiles — accessed from a core 'Self' state of compassion and curiosity to heal internal conflicts and trauma.

How do you do Internal Family Systems (IFS)?

  1. 1.Find: notice a part that's active right now — a recurring thought, emotion, or body sensation; identify where you feel it physically
  2. 2.Focus and Flesh Out: bring gentle attention to the part; ask what it looks like, how old it is, and what its role is without trying to change it
  3. 3.Feel Toward (check for Self-energy): notice your attitude toward this part; if you feel curious and compassionate, you're in Self; if judgmental or fearful, ask that blending part to step back
  4. 4.BeFriend: from Self, ask the part with genuine curiosity: 'What is your job? What are you protecting me from? What are you afraid would happen if you stopped?'
  5. 5.Integrate daily: spend 5 minutes each morning doing an internal check-in — which parts are active today? What do they need? Journal the dialogue between Self and parts

How long does it take?

15-30 min/day for self-led practice; 1 hour/week with therapist recommended.

Is it hard to start?

medium.
