How do you do Non-Religious Meditation?
- 1.Start with focused attention meditation: sit comfortably, close eyes, and focus on the sensation of breathing at the nostrils for 10 minutes; when the mind wanders, gently return to the breath (this return IS the practice)
- 2.Graduate to open monitoring: after 2-4 weeks of focused attention, practice observing all sensations, thoughts, and emotions as they arise without engaging with or following any of them
- 3.Use a secular meditation app (Waking Up by Sam Harris, or Headspace) for guided sessions that teach technique without spiritual framing
- 4.Build to 20 minutes daily: research shows most cognitive benefits emerge around 10-20 minutes per session, with 8 weeks of consistent practice producing measurable brain changes
- 5.Add body scan meditation: once weekly, spend 20 minutes slowly moving attention through each body part from toes to crown, noticing sensations without judgment
How long does it take?
10-20 min/day.
Is it hard to start?
easy.
