What is Caffeine Reset?

A protocol to reset caffeine tolerance by gradually tapering intake over 2-4 weeks, allowing adenosine receptors to normalize so lower doses become effective again for alertness and focus.

Is there evidence for it?

EVIDENCEmoderate

How do you do Caffeine Reset?

  1. 1.Calculate your current daily caffeine intake in milligrams (coffee ~95mg/cup, espresso ~63mg/shot, tea ~47mg/cup, soda ~35mg/can)
  2. 2.Taper by 25% every 3-5 days: if you drink 4 cups of coffee, drop to 3 in week 1, 2 in week 2, 1 in week 3; substitute with half-caf, then decaf to maintain the ritual
  3. 3.Manage withdrawal symptoms: headaches peak at 20-51 hours after reduction; take ibuprofen if needed, stay hydrated, and use peppermint oil on temples for natural headache relief
  4. 4.During the taper, support natural energy: get morning sunlight within 30 minutes of waking, take a 10-minute walk after lunch instead of reaching for coffee, and prioritize 7-8 hours of sleep
  5. 5.After 7-14 days at zero caffeine (or your minimum), reintroduce at 50% of your original intake; many people find this lower dose now provides the same alertness their full dose used to

How long does it take?

2-4 weeks for the protocol; 5 min/day for tracking.

Is it hard to start?

medium.
