Evening Shutdown Ritual (Cal Newport)

habits · easy · 5-15 minutes daily

What is Evening Shutdown Ritual (Cal Newport)?

A quick 5-15 minute end-of-workday ritual that creates a hard boundary between work and personal time. Systematically closes all open loops so your brain can fully disengage, reducing stress and preventing work rumination in the evening.

How do you do Evening Shutdown Ritual (Cal Newport)?

  1. 1.Set a consistent shutdown time and begin the ritual 15-30 minutes before — this is non-negotiable, not a suggestion
  2. 2.Do a final inbox scan: identify any messages requiring urgent response before tomorrow and handle them; everything else waits
  3. 3.Review every task list and the next few days of your calendar to confirm nothing critical is being forgotten or sneaking up
  4. 4.For each incomplete task, verify either (a) you have a trusted plan for completion or (b) it's captured in a system you'll revisit at the right time
  5. 5.Close your laptop and say your shutdown phrase out loud — Newport uses 'Schedule shutdown, complete' — then agree that any work thought gets dismissed with 'I completed the shutdown ritual'

How long does it take?

5-15 minutes daily.

Is it hard to start?

easy.
