What is Rumination-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Self-Guided)?
Adapted from Edward Watkins' RFCBT, this approach uses functional analysis to identify when rumination shifts from helpful problem-solving to unhelpful brooding, and teaches concrete techniques to shift processing mode in real time.
Is there evidence for it?

How do you do Rumination-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Self-Guided)?
- 1.Learn to distinguish helpful vs. unhelpful rumination: Helpful = concrete, specific, action-oriented ('What exactly happened and what can I do about it?'). Unhelpful = abstract, self-blaming, circular ('Why does this always happen to me?')
- 2.Practice the 'ABCD' functional analysis when you notice rumination: Antecedent (what triggered it?), Behavior (what type of thinking am I doing?), Consequence (is this making me feel better or worse?), Do differently (shift to concrete processing)
- 3.Use 'concrete processing' prompts: Instead of 'Why am I so anxious?', ask 'What specifically triggered this feeling? What is one small thing I can do right now?'
- 4.Create 'if-then' anti-rumination plans: 'If I notice I'm replaying a conversation for more than 2 minutes, then I will do 5 minutes of physical activity'
- 5.Practice absorption activities: When rumination strikes, engage fully in a sensory-rich activity (cooking, walking, music) that demands present-moment attention
How long does it take?
10-15 minutes daily for exercises + in-the-moment application.
Is it hard to start?
medium.
