Self-Distancing (Third-Person Self-Talk)
emotional · easy · 1-3 minutes per practice, in the moment
What is Self-Distancing (Third-Person Self-Talk)?
Ethan Kross's technique of referring to yourself using your own name or non-first-person pronouns during self-reflection, which automatically creates psychological distance from emotional experiences and enhances emotion regulation without depleting cognitive resources.

How do you do Self-Distancing (Third-Person Self-Talk)?
- 1.When facing a stressful situation, silently ask yourself: '[Your name], what should you do right now?' instead of 'What should I do?' This subtle shift engages the observer perspective
- 2.Practice pre-event distancing: Before a challenging conversation or event, coach yourself in the third person: '[Your name], you've handled situations like this before. Here's what you're going to do...'
- 3.Use post-event processing: After an upsetting experience, journal about it in the third person: '[Your name] felt hurt when that happened because...' This reduces rumination compared to first-person journaling
- 4.Apply the 'fly on the wall' technique: When emotionally overwhelmed, imagine watching yourself from across the room. What would you observe? What advice would you give that person?
- 5.Practice temporal distancing alongside self-distancing: Ask '[Your name], how will you feel about this in 5 years?' Combining third-person with temporal distance is especially powerful
How long does it take?
1-3 minutes per practice, in the moment.
Is it hard to start?
