Yoga Nidra (Conscious Sleep Meditation)

Meditation & Recovery · Beginner (you literally just lie there) · 20-45 minutes, 3-5x per week

What is Yoga Nidra (Conscious Sleep Meditation)?

A specific meditation technique performed lying down that guides you through the hypnagogic state between waking and sleeping. Unlike NSDR (which Huberman adapted from this), traditional yoga nidra includes sankalpa (intention setting) and emotional body work. r/Meditation users report it's the most powerful technique for people who 'can't meditate' because you just lie there and follow instructions. 30 minutes equals roughly 2 hours of regular sleep in terms of restoration.

Is there evidence for it?

EVIDENCEStrong — extensive yoga research, PTSD treatment studies, neuroscience of hypnagogic states

How do you do Yoga Nidra (Conscious Sleep Meditation)?

  1. 1.Lie on your back in corpse pose (savasana) — use a pillow under knees if needed
  2. 2.Use a guided recording (Insight Timer app has excellent free ones, 20-45 minutes)
  3. 3.Set a sankalpa (intention) at the beginning — a short, positive, present-tense statement of your deepest desire
  4. 4.Follow the guide through: body rotation (systematic awareness of body parts), breath awareness, visualization
  5. 5.If you fall asleep, that's OK initially — with practice you'll stay in the liminal state
  6. 6.Best times: afternoon (energy recovery), before bed (sleep quality), or after learning (memory consolidation)
  7. 7.Practice 3-5 times per week for noticeable effects on stress, sleep quality, and emotional regulation
  8. 8.Start with 20-minute sessions and work up to 45 minutes as you get comfortable

How long does it take?

20-45 minutes, 3-5x per week.
