The 4-7-8 Breathing Technique for Sleep

Sleep & Relaxation · Beginner · 1-2 minutes

What is The 4-7-8 Breathing Technique for Sleep?

Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, exhale for 8 seconds. Developed by Dr. Andrew Weil based on pranayama breathing. r/Meditation and r/selfimprovement users report falling asleep in under 2 minutes after mastering this technique. The extended exhale activates the vagus nerve and parasympathetic nervous system more aggressively than any other breathing pattern. Often called 'the natural tranquilizer.'

Is there evidence for it?

EVIDENCEModerate — based on pranayama research, vagus nerve activation studies, widespread clinical recommendation
