Anti-Rumination Protocol

mental_health · medium · Ongoing awareness + 15-min worry window

What is Anti-Rumination Protocol?

Break the cycle of repetitive negative thinking (rumination) that fuels depression and anxiety. Rumination feels productive but it's just your brain spinning in circles. These techniques interrupt the loop.

How do you do Anti-Rumination Protocol?

  1. 1.Notice the rumination: when you catch yourself replaying a conversation or worrying about something for the 3rd+ time, say 'There's rumination' — just labeling it reduces its power
  2. 2.Set a 'worry window': schedule 15 minutes at 6pm to worry. When ruminative thoughts come at other times, write them on a list and say 'I'll worry about that at 6pm.' Most items lose urgency by then
  3. 3.Physical pattern interrupt: when stuck in a thought loop, do 20 jumping jacks, hold an ice cube, or take a 5-minute walk. Movement disrupts the default mode network
  4. 4.The 'Useful?' test: ask 'Is this thought helping me solve a problem or just making me feel bad?' If it's not useful, redirect attention to what you can control
  5. 5.Absorption technique: fully immerse in a sensory-rich activity — cooking, playing music, gardening, a puzzle. Rumination can't compete with focused engagement

How long does it take?

Ongoing awareness + 15-min worry window.

Is it hard to start?

medium.
