How do you do Self-Compassion Break (Kristin Neff)?

  1. 1.Step 1 — Mindfulness: Place your hand on your heart and say 'This is a moment of suffering.' Name it without minimizing or exaggerating
  2. 2.Step 2 — Common humanity: Say 'Suffering is part of life. I'm not the only one who feels this way.' This counters the isolation of shame
  3. 3.Step 3 — Self-kindness: Say 'May I be kind to myself. May I give myself what I need right now.' Then ask: what would I say to my best friend in this situation? Say that to yourself
  4. 4.Practice this every time you catch your inner critic: after a mistake, a rejection, a comparison, or any moment of 'I'm not enough'
  5. 5.Keep a self-compassion journal: each night, write about one difficult moment and apply the 3 steps. After 3 weeks, your default self-talk starts to shift
