Body Doubling

ADHD Self-Management · Easy — low barrier to entry, especially with virtual options · 25-90 minutes per session; frequency as needed for difficult tasks

What is Body Doubling?

A productivity technique where you work on your tasks in the presence of another person — either physically or virtually. The other person doesn't need to help you or even do the same task; their mere presence serves as an anchor that helps maintain focus, accountability, and momentum. For ADHD brains that struggle with task initiation and sustained attention, body doubling leverages social facilitation and dopamine from social connection to bridge the motivation gap.

Is there evidence for it?

EVIDENCEEmerging. University of East Lancashire study found 95.7% of ADHD participants reported improved focus during body doubling. However, formal RCTs are limited — most evidence is anecdotal and community-driven. Theoretically supported by social facilitation theory and dopamine reward circuitry activation from social presence.

How do you do Body Doubling?

  1. 1.Identify your body double: This can be a friend, coworker, family member, or even a stranger in a virtual coworking session. The person doesn't need to do the same task — they just need to be present and working on something
  2. 2.Set up the session: Agree on a time block (25-90 minutes works well). Each person states what they'll work on. The key: both people are doing focused work, not chatting. Minimal interaction during the session
  3. 3.Virtual options: Use platforms like Focusmate, Flown, or even a silent video call with a friend. Some people use 'study with me' YouTube livestreams as a virtual body double. The visual presence of another person working is what matters
  4. 4.Use body doubling strategically for your hardest tasks — the ones where task initiation is most difficult. Pair it with a timer (Pomodoro) for additional structure
  5. 5.Build it into your routine: Schedule regular body doubling sessions for recurring difficult tasks (weekly admin, deep work blocks, exercise). Don't rely on it exclusively — combine with other ADHD strategies to build independent working capacity over time

How long does it take?

25-90 minutes per session; frequency as needed for difficult tasks.

Is it hard to start?

Easy — low barrier to entry, especially with virtual options.
