What is Temporal Motivation Theory for Procrastination?
A mathematical model developed by Piers Steel that explains exactly why you procrastinate using four variables: Motivation = (Expectancy x Value) / (Impulsiveness x Delay). Instead of moralistic explanations ('you're lazy'), TMT shows that procrastination is a predictable result of how human motivation works. Low confidence in success (expectancy) or low enjoyment (value) divided by high distractibility (impulsiveness) and distant deadlines (delay) = low motivation. Understanding the equation lets you hack each variable.
Is there evidence for it?
EVIDENCEStrong. Steel's 2007 meta-analysis integrated 691 correlations from 216 studies with thousands of participants, confirming the model's predictive power (r = 0.45). TMT is considered the most comprehensive theoretical framework for procrastination. Each individual intervention (implementation intentions, deadline proximity, environmental design) has its own evidence base.
How do you do Temporal Motivation Theory for Procrastination?
- 1.Diagnose your procrastination: For a task you're avoiding, rate each variable 1-10. Expectancy: 'How confident am I that I can succeed?' Value: 'How enjoyable or meaningful is this task?' Impulsiveness: 'How easily distracted am I right now?' Delay: 'How far away is the deadline/payoff?' Whichever variable is most problematic is where to intervene

- 3.Boost Value (increase reward/meaning): Connect the task to a personal value ('this report isn't just for my boss — it builds my expertise'). Add intrinsic rewards (work in a nice cafe, pair with music). Make boring tasks social (body doubling). Create artificial urgency or competition. The dopamine menu concept applies here
- 4.Reduce Impulsiveness (decrease distractibility): Remove temptations before starting — phone in another room, website blockers, clean workspace. Use implementation intentions ('When I sit at my desk at 9am, I will open the document and write for 25 minutes'). Commit publicly. Use accountability partners. Structure your environment to make the right choice the default choice
- 5.Reduce Delay (bring the deadline closer): Set artificial intermediate deadlines. Use the Pomodoro technique (25-minute sprints). Schedule check-ins with someone. Visualize the future self who benefits from completing the task. Create immediate consequences for not starting (bet money, public commitment). The closer the deadline, the higher the motivation — so shrink the time horizon
