Single-Tasking Deep Work Blocks

What is Single-Tasking Deep Work Blocks?

Cal Newport's 'Deep Work' hypothesis, supported by research from Gloria Mark at UC Irvine, argues that the ability to focus without distraction on cognitively demanding tasks is becoming increasingly rare AND increasingly valuable. Mark's research shows the average knowledge worker switches tasks every 3 minutes and takes 23 minutes to fully refocus. Single-tasking blocks — dedicated time with all distractions physically removed — are the antidote.

How do you do Single-Tasking Deep Work Blocks?

  1. 1.Block 1-2 hours daily for 'deep work' — put it on your calendar with the same priority as a meeting with your CEO
  2. 2.During deep work: phone in another room (not just silent — physically absent), all browser tabs closed except what you need, notification blockers active
  3. 3.Use a 'shutdown ritual' to transition in: write down your single objective for the session, set a timer, then begin
  4. 4.Train your attention: start with 30-minute blocks if you can't sustain focus for a full hour — build up over weeks
  5. 5.Track your daily deep work hours — Newport recommends 4 hours/day as the productive maximum for most people

How long does it take?

1-4 hours/day.
