What is Screen Time Audit & Reduction?
A data-driven protocol for understanding and systematically reducing screen time. Most people vastly underestimate their daily screen usage — the average is 7+ hours. This intervention starts with honest measurement, identifies the biggest time sinks, then applies progressive reduction targets with environmental design to make cuts stick.

How do you do Screen Time Audit & Reduction?
- 1.Install a comprehensive screen time tracker (iOS Screen Time, Android Digital Wellbeing, or RescueTime for desktop) and track ALL device usage for 7 full days without changing behavior. Record daily totals, per-app breakdowns, number of pickups, and first/last screen interaction times
- 2.Analyze the data: identify your top 5 time-consuming apps, peak usage windows (morning in bed, lunch break, evening couch), and total daily average. Calculate weekly hours — most people are shocked to find 40-50+ hours/week across devices. Set a specific reduction target (e.g., reduce from 7h to 4h daily)
- 3.Implement environmental barriers for your worst offenders: move social media apps off home screen into nested folders, set app time limits (start generous, tighten weekly by 15 min), enable grayscale mode during evening hours, charge phone outside bedroom, use a physical alarm clock
- 4.Create 'phone-free zones and times': no phones at meals, no screens first 30 min after waking or last 30 min before bed, no phones in bathroom. Replace these micro-moments with alternatives (book by bed, newspaper at breakfast, music during cooking)
- 5.Review metrics weekly every Sunday. Track trend over 4 weeks. Celebrate reductions, diagnose rebounds (stress? boredom? specific triggers?). Adjust limits. Goal: sustainable 30-50% reduction from baseline within 4-6 weeks
How long does it take?
1 week audit + 4-6 weeks active reduction.
