Morning Pages (Stream of Consciousness Journaling)

What is Morning Pages (Stream of Consciousness Journaling)?

Julia Cameron's foundational creative recovery tool: write three pages of longhand stream-of-consciousness first thing every morning. Not journaling, not planning — pure brain dump. Clears mental clutter, surfaces subconscious thoughts, and reliably breaks through creative blocks.

How do you do Morning Pages (Stream of Consciousness Journaling)?

  1. 1.Keep a notebook and pen on your nightstand — do morning pages immediately upon waking, before coffee or phone
  2. 2.Write exactly three pages of longhand, stream-of-consciousness text. Don't stop, don't edit, don't censor
  3. 3.There is no wrong way to do this. Write 'I don't know what to write' until something comes. It always does
  4. 4.Do NOT read your pages for at least 8 weeks — the point is output, not input. They're not meant to be good
  5. 5.Commit to 12 weeks straight. The first 2 weeks feel forced, weeks 3-4 feel boring, then breakthroughs start appearing

How long does it take?

30-45 minutes every morning.

Is it hard to start?

easy.
