What is Sabbatical Planning Protocol?
A structured approach to planning and executing an extended break from work before burnout forces one on you. Research from organizational psychology shows planned sabbaticals improve creativity, job satisfaction, and productivity for up to a year after return. The key is proactive planning, not crisis-driven escape.

How do you do Sabbatical Planning Protocol?
- 1.Set a sabbatical date 6-12 months out and work backward: document all your processes, cross-train a backup person, build a financial runway
- 2.Define the sabbatical purpose: rest and recovery, exploration of a new interest, travel, family time, or creative project. Without intention it becomes anxious idleness
- 3.Set clear boundaries: no email, no Slack, no 'just checking in.' Tell everyone the dates and that you will be completely unreachable
- 4.During the sabbatical, follow the three phases: decompress (week 1-2, do nothing), explore (weeks 3-6, follow curiosity), integrate (final weeks, journal about insights and what you want to change)
- 5.Plan re-entry: schedule a buffer week with no meetings to ease back in. Implement at least one structural change based on your sabbatical insights
How long does it take?
Minimum 2 weeks, ideally 4-12 weeks.
