Implementation Intentions (Gollwitzer Protocol)

Self-Discipline · easy · 5 minutes to create each plan; ongoing automatic activation

What is Implementation Intentions (Gollwitzer Protocol)?

A goal-pursuit strategy developed by psychologist Peter Gollwitzer that dramatically increases follow-through by pre-deciding the when, where, and how of a behavior using if-then planning. Instead of vague intentions ('I'll exercise more'), you create precise action triggers ('If it is Monday at 7 AM, then I will put on my running shoes and run for 30 minutes'). Over 200 studies show this simple technique roughly doubles the probability of goal achievement.

How do you do Implementation Intentions (Gollwitzer Protocol)?

  1. 1.Choose a specific goal or behavior you want to consistently perform
  2. 2.Write an if-then statement that specifies the exact situation and response: 'If [SITUATION], then I will [BEHAVIOR]'
  3. 3.Make the situation cue as specific as possible: time, location, preceding event (e.g., 'If I finish lunch, then I will walk for 10 minutes')
  4. 4.Rehearse the if-then plan mentally several times — visualize yourself performing the behavior when the cue occurs
  5. 5.Review and update your implementation intentions weekly, adding new ones as old behaviors become automatic
