Temptation Bundling (Milkman Protocol)

Self-Discipline · easy · No additional time — it restructures existing time use

What is Temptation Bundling (Milkman Protocol)?

A behavioral economics strategy developed by Wharton professor Katherine Milkman where you pair an activity you should do but tend to avoid with an activity you love but feel guilty about. For example, only listening to addictive audiobooks while exercising, or only watching your favorite show while on the treadmill. The technique hijacks your desire for instant gratification to fuel productive behaviors.

How do you do Temptation Bundling (Milkman Protocol)?

  1. 1.List activities you know you should do but frequently procrastinate on (exercise, meal prep, filing taxes, cleaning)
  2. 2.List guilty pleasures you enjoy but feel are unproductive (binge-watching, podcasts, treats, social media)
  3. 3.Pair each 'should do' with a 'want to' — the pleasurable activity is ONLY permitted during the productive one
  4. 4.Enforce the rule strictly: no Netflix unless you're on the treadmill, no favorite podcast unless you're cleaning
  5. 5.After 2-3 weeks, evaluate which pairings stuck and adjust — some combinations work better than others

How long does it take?

No additional time — it restructures existing time use.

Is it hard to start?

easy.
