What is Deliberate Practice?

How do you do Deliberate Practice?

  1. 1.Identify a specific sub-skill to improve (not a vague goal — a precise weakness)
  2. 2.Design or find a practice activity that isolates and targets that sub-skill
  3. 3.Practice at the edge of your current ability — not so easy it's comfortable, not so hard it's impossible
  4. 4.Get immediate feedback: a coach, recording, metrics, or self-assessment after each attempt
  5. 5.Analyze errors, adjust your approach, and repeat — the cycle of attempt-feedback-adjustment is the core

How long does it take?

1-4 hours daily for serious skill development; minimum 30 min for hobbyists.

Is it hard to start?

hard.

Source: K. Anders Ericsson (1993 violinist study; Peak, 2016). Note: the '10,000 hour rule' (Gladwell, Outliers, 2008) is a misinterpretation — Ericsson clarified it was an average, and quality of practice matters more than quantity. Meta-analysis shows deliberate practice explains significant variance in performance across domains.
