Envelope Method

financial · easy · 1 hour for initial setup; 15 minutes per pay period for allocation

What is Envelope Method?

How do you do Envelope Method?

  1. 1.Create budget categories: groceries, dining out, entertainment, gas, clothing, etc.
  2. 2.Assign a specific dollar amount to each category based on your budget
  3. 3.At the start of each pay period, allocate cash into labeled envelopes (or use a digital envelope app like YNAB or Goodbudget)
  4. 4.Spend only from the appropriate envelope — when it's empty, you're done for the period
  5. 5.At period end, leftover envelope money rolls into savings or next period — decide your rule

How long does it take?

1 hour for initial setup; 15 minutes per pay period for allocation.

Is it hard to start?
