What is Expense Tracking?

Recording every dollar spent for at least 30 days to build complete awareness of where money actually goes. The gap between perceived and actual spending is often shocking — awareness alone changes behavior.

How do you do Expense Tracking?

  1. 1.Choose a tracking method: app (Mint, YNAB, Copilot), spreadsheet, or paper notebook
  2. 2.Record every expense within 24 hours — amount, category, and whether it was a need or want
  3. 3.Track for a minimum of 30 complete days to capture all recurring expenses
  4. 4.At month end, categorize totals and compare to your intended budget
  5. 5.Identify your top 3 spending leaks (categories where actual >> intended) and set specific reduction targets
