What is Screen Time Management?

A structured approach to reducing excessive screen time by creating tech-free zones, implementing notification hygiene, and replacing passive consumption with intentional digital engagement.

How do you do Screen Time Management?

  1. 1.Measure your baseline: check screen time statistics on your phone (Settings > Screen Time on iOS, Digital Wellbeing on Android) and set a realistic reduction goal (e.g., 25% less in week 1)
  2. 2.Implement the 3 sacred boundaries: no screens in the bedroom (charge phone in another room), no screens during meals, no screens first 30 minutes after waking or last 30 before bed
  3. 3.Practice notification hygiene: turn off ALL non-human notifications (likes, news alerts, game prompts, promotional emails); keep only direct messages from real people
  4. 4.Use the 'digital sabbath': choose one day per week (or 12 hours) to go completely offline; plan analog activities in advance so you're not white-knuckling through boredom
  5. 5.Replace passive scrolling with active use: when you pick up your phone, state your intention out loud ('I'm going to text Laura about dinner') and put it down when that task is complete

How long does it take?

Saves 1-3 hours/day once implemented.

Is it hard to start?

medium.
