What is Shinrin-yoku (Japanese Forest Bathing)?

The Japanese practice of immersing in forest atmosphere through all five senses, established as 'Forest Medicine' by Dr. Qing Li. Research shows increased natural killer cell activity (cancer prevention), reduced cortisol and blood pressure, improved mood, and enhanced immune function lasting up to 30 days after a forest visit.

How do you do Shinrin-yoku (Japanese Forest Bathing)?

  1. 1.Choose a forest or wooded area with mature trees; leave your phone on silent or off — this is not hiking or exercise
  2. 2.Walk slowly and aimlessly for 2-6 hours, engaging all five senses: notice colors and light patterns (sight), bird songs and rustling leaves (hearing), bark and moss textures (touch), forest air and soil (smell), clean water if available (taste)
  3. 3.Stop frequently to sit, lean against trees, or lie on the ground; breathe deeply to inhale phytoncides (antimicrobial volatile organic compounds released by trees that boost NK cell activity)
  4. 4.Practice at least once monthly for immune benefits; even 15-minute walks in wooded areas reduce stress hormones significantly
  5. 5.For enhanced benefits: visit coniferous forests (higher phytoncide concentration), go during or after rain (amplified aromas), and practice in morning hours when phytoncide levels peak

How long does it take?

2-6 hours monthly (minimum 15 minutes weekly).

Is it hard to start?
