Sufi Whirling (Ecstatic Movement Meditation)
spiritual · hard · 15-30 minutes per session, 2-3 times per week
What is Sufi Whirling (Ecstatic Movement Meditation)?
A physically active meditation originating with Sufi dervishes of the Mevlevi order, involving continuous spinning as a path to spiritual transcendence. Research shows whirling increases body-mind focus, self-regulation, and positive affect; regular ecstatic dance reduces cortisol, improves blood pressure, and enhances heart rate variability.

How do you do Sufi Whirling (Ecstatic Movement Meditation)?
- 1.Begin with grounding: stand with feet shoulder-width apart, arms crossed over chest, eyes slightly closed; take several deep breaths to center yourself
- 2.Start spinning slowly counterclockwise (left foot stays in place as the pivot, right foot propels the turn), with right palm facing up (receiving from heaven) and left palm facing down (directing to earth)
- 3.Gradually increase speed while maintaining focus on the left thumb or an inner focal point to prevent dizziness — Sufi dervishes train vestibular adaptation over months
- 4.Start with 2-3 minute spinning sessions and build gradually; when stopping, cross arms over chest and stand still with eyes closed until balance returns
- 5.Alternative: practice ecstatic dance (free-form movement to rhythmic music) for 20-30 minutes — same neurological benefits without the training requirement for spinning
How long does it take?
15-30 minutes per session, 2-3 times per week.
Is it hard to start?
