What is Cognitive Reappraisal?
A real-time emotion regulation strategy that involves reinterpreting the meaning of an emotional situation before the full emotional response unfolds, changing what you think about a situation rather than trying to suppress the feeling itself.

How do you do Cognitive Reappraisal?
- 1.Learn the three reappraisal strategies: (1) Situation reinterpretation — 'Maybe this rejection is redirecting me to something better'; (2) Normalizing — 'Anyone would feel this way in this situation'; (3) Silver lining — 'What can I learn or gain from this?'
- 2.Practice the 'reappraisal pause': When you notice a strong negative emotion building, pause for 3 seconds and ask: 'Is there another way to see this situation?'
- 3.Generate multiple interpretations: For any triggering event, force yourself to come up with 3 alternative explanations. The goal isn't to find the 'right' one, but to break the automatic first interpretation
- 4.Use 'temporal reappraisal': Ask yourself 'Will this matter in 1 week? 1 month? 1 year?' Time perspective naturally reframes the significance of most stressors
- 5.Build a 'reappraisal library': After successfully reframing a situation, write it down. Over time, you'll build a personal reference of effective reframes for common triggers
How long does it take?
2-5 minutes per practice, applied in real time.
Is it hard to start?
medium.
