What is Broaden-and-Build Positive Emotions Practice?

Based on Barbara Fredrickson's theory, this intervention deliberately cultivates positive emotions (joy, gratitude, serenity, interest, hope, pride, amusement, inspiration, awe, love) to broaden thought-action repertoires and build lasting psychological resources, creating an upward spiral of wellbeing.

How do you do Broaden-and-Build Positive Emotions Practice?

  1. 1.Learn the 10 positive emotions: joy, gratitude, serenity, interest, hope, pride, amusement, inspiration, awe, and love. Track which you experience least — that's your growth opportunity
  2. 2.Practice the '3:1 positivity ratio' — aim for at least 3 positive emotional experiences for every 1 negative. Use a simple evening tally to track your ratio
  3. 3.Create a 'positivity portfolio': Collect photos, quotes, music, memories, and activities that reliably trigger each of the 10 positive emotions. Use this as an intentional toolkit when your ratio drops
  4. 4.Practice 'loving-kindness meditation' (Fredrickson's most studied intervention): Spend 5 minutes generating feelings of warmth toward yourself, a loved one, a neutral person, and a difficult person
  5. 5.Leverage the 'upward spiral': After a positive experience, use the broadened mindset to learn something new, connect with someone, or take a creative risk. This builds lasting resources

How long does it take?

10-15 minutes daily.

Is it hard to start?
