How do you do Vagus Nerve Stimulation Exercises?

  1. 1.Cold Face Dive Reflex: Fill a bowl with cold water (50-60F), take a deep breath, and submerge your face for 15-30 seconds. This triggers the mammalian dive reflex, slowing heart rate by 10-25%. Alternatively, splash cold water on face and neck.
  2. 2.Gargling: Gargle vigorously with water for 30 seconds, 3 times daily. This activates vagal motor fibers in the throat. Gargle hard enough that your eyes water slightly.
  3. 3.Humming and Chanting: Hum at different pitches for 5-10 minutes, feeling vibrations in your chest and throat. 'Om' chanting is particularly effective. Singing loudly also works.
  4. 4.Diaphragmatic Breathing: Practice extended exhale breathing (4 seconds in, 7 seconds out) for 5 minutes. The exhale phase directly stimulates vagal tone.
  5. 5.Self-Ear Massage: Gently massage the inner ear (tragus area) for 2-3 minutes, as the auricular branch of the vagus nerve passes through this area.

How long does it take?

10-15 minutes daily.

Is it hard to start?

easy.
