What is CGM-Guided Eating (Continuous Glucose Monitoring)?

Using a continuous glucose monitor without diabetes to track real-time blood sugar responses to different foods, meals, exercise, stress, and sleep. Provides personalized metabolic data to optimize food choices, meal timing, and activity patterns for metabolic health.

How do you do CGM-Guided Eating (Continuous Glucose Monitoring)?

  1. 1.Obtain a CGM: Dexcom Stelo (over-the-counter, no prescription needed), or use programs like Levels, Nutrisense, or Signos that pair a CGM with coaching. Apply the sensor to your upper arm; it lasts 10-14 days.
  2. 2.During the first 2 weeks, eat your normal diet and log all meals, exercise, stress events, and sleep. This establishes your personal glucose response baseline — which foods spike you and which don't.
  3. 3.Test specific foods: eat one variable at a time to isolate its glucose impact. Try white rice vs. brown rice, banana alone vs. banana with almond butter, morning carbs vs. evening carbs. Target: keep glucose below 140 mg/dL post-meal and return to baseline within 2 hours.
  4. 4.Experiment with glucose-lowering strategies: test post-meal walking (even 5-10 min), eating protein/fat before carbs ('food sequencing'), adding vinegar before meals, and different exercise timing. The CGM gives you immediate feedback.
  5. 5.Use CGM as a short-term educational tool (4-8 weeks), not a permanent fixture. Learn your personal metabolic patterns, build lasting habits, then discontinue. Avoid becoming obsessively fixated on glucose readings — it's only one marker of metabolic health.
