What is Buteyko Breathing Method?
A breathing retraining method developed by Ukrainian physician Konstantin Buteyko to correct chronic hyperventilation and restore healthy CO2 levels. Core principles: nasal breathing always, reduced breathing volume, and relaxation. Uses the Control Pause (CP) test — comfortable breath hold after normal exhale — as the key metric (healthy = 40+ seconds). Recommended by the British Thoracic Society for asthma symptom management. Reduces bronchodilator usage.

How do you do Buteyko Breathing Method?
- 1.Measure your Control Pause (CP): breathe normally through the nose, after a natural exhale pinch your nose and time how long until you feel the first definite desire to breathe (not until discomfort) — this is your baseline
- 2.Practice nasal breathing exclusively: tape mouth during sleep (use micropore tape), breathe through nose during all daily activities and exercise; the nose warms, filters, and slows air, adding crucial nitric oxide
- 3.Reduced breathing exercise: sit upright, breathe normally through the nose, then deliberately make each breath slightly smaller and quieter than the last; create a tolerable air hunger for 3-5 minutes; rest and repeat 3 times
- 4.Practice breath holds after normal exhales: pinch nose, hold for half your CP time, release and breathe normally for 1 minute, repeat 6 times; this builds CO2 tolerance without distress
- 5.Track CP daily (first thing in the morning before eating): aim to increase from baseline toward 40 seconds over weeks/months; a rising CP indicates normalizing breathing patterns and improved health
How long does it take?
15-20 minutes of exercises, 2-3 times daily; nasal breathing 24/7.
