Vagus Nerve Stimulation (DIY)

health · easy · 2-5 minutes per technique

What is Vagus Nerve Stimulation (DIY)?

Activate your vagus nerve — the master switch between stress and calm — using simple physical techniques. Reduces anxiety, lowers heart rate, improves digestion, and shifts you from fight-or-flight to rest-and-digest.

Is there evidence for it?

EVIDENCEmoderate

How do you do Vagus Nerve Stimulation (DIY)?

  1. 1.Cold water face dip: fill a bowl with cold water, hold your breath, and submerge your face for 15-30 seconds. Triggers the dive reflex, instantly calming your heart rate
  2. 2.Humming or chanting: hum deeply for 5 minutes. The vibration in your throat directly stimulates the vagus nerve
  3. 3.Gargling: gargle water vigorously for 30 seconds, 3x daily. The gag reflex activates vagal tone
  4. 4.Ear massage: gently massage the inside of your ear (tragus area) for 2-3 minutes. Auricular branch of vagus runs through here
  5. 5.Long exhale breathing: any pattern where exhale is longer than inhale (e.g., in 4, out 8) activates the vagal brake

How long does it take?

2-5 minutes per technique.

Is it hard to start?

easy.
