What is Resonance Frequency Breathing?

A biofeedback-guided breathing practice where you find your individual resonance frequency — the exact breathing rate (typically between 4.5 and 6.5 breaths per minute) that maximizes your heart rate variability. Unlike coherent breathing which uses 5.5 bpm for everyone, this approach uses HRV biofeedback to find your personal optimal rate. The resonance occurs when breathing frequency matches the natural oscillation of the baroreflex loop, creating maximum cardiovascular coherence.

How do you do Resonance Frequency Breathing?

  1. 1.Acquire an HRV biofeedback device — options include Elite HRV sensor + app, HeartMath Inner Balance, or a chest strap HR monitor with biofeedback software (e.g., HRV4Training or Optimal HRV). You need real-time beat-to-beat heart rate data, not just average HR
  2. 2.Test breathing rates from 4.5 to 6.5 breaths per minute, spending 2 minutes at each rate: 4.5 bpm (6.7s in, 6.7s out), 5.0 bpm (6s in, 6s out), 5.5 bpm (5.5s in, 5.5s out), 6.0 bpm (5s in, 5s out), 6.5 bpm (4.6s in, 4.6s out). Use a pacing app for accuracy
  3. 3.At your resonance frequency, you will see the largest oscillations in heart rate — your heart rate will swing dramatically higher on each inhale and lower on each exhale. The HRV amplitude will be visibly greatest. Note this rate — it is your personal resonance frequency
  4. 4.Practice breathing at your resonance frequency for 20 minutes daily using a pacing guide. Breathe through the nose, smoothly and evenly, belly-first. No pause between inhale and exhale — the transition should be seamless like a sine wave
  5. 5.After 8-10 weeks of daily practice, research shows sustained improvements in resting HRV, anxiety levels, and stress resilience. Reassess your resonance frequency every 3-6 months as it can shift with improved fitness and vagal tone.

How long does it take?

20 minutes daily; initial assessment takes 20-30 minutes.
