What is Crucial Conversations Model?
A framework for high-stakes conversations where opinions vary and emotions run strong. The core insight is that dialogue breaks down when people feel unsafe — they either go to silence (withholding, avoiding, masking) or violence (controlling, labeling, attacking). The skill is not in having the perfect argument but in maintaining safety so that the pool of shared meaning keeps growing. When people feel safe, they can hear almost anything.

How do you do Crucial Conversations Model?
- 1.Start with Heart: before opening your mouth, clarify what you really want — for yourself, for the other person, and for the relationship. Ask: 'What would I do right now if I really wanted these results?' This prevents you from slipping into wanting to win, punish, or keep the peace at all costs.
- 2.Learn to Spot when safety is at risk: watch for the moment someone moves to silence (going quiet, sarcasm, sugarcoating) or violence (controlling the topic, labeling you, making threats). When you see it, STOP the content of the conversation and rebuild safety first.
- 3.Make It Safe using two tools: Mutual Purpose ('I want to find something that works for both of us') and Mutual Respect (never let the other person feel disrespected, even during disagreement). If needed, use Contrasting: 'I don't want you to think I don't value your work. I do. What I want to discuss is...'
- 4.STATE your path: Share your facts (least controversial first), Tell your story (your interpretation), Ask for the other's path ('How do you see it?'), Talk tentatively ('I'm starting to wonder if...'), Encourage testing ('Do you see it differently?')
- 5.Explore Others' Paths using AMPP: Ask to get things rolling, Mirror to confirm feelings ('You say you're fine but you seem upset'), Paraphrase to acknowledge the story, Prime when they're still holding back (offer your best guess at what they might be thinking)
