What is Empathy Mapping Exercise?
A structured exercise for developing cognitive empathy — the ability to understand another person's perspective, motivations, and emotional landscape without necessarily having experienced the same thing. Originally from design thinking (IDEO, Stanford d.school), empathy mapping has been adapted for personal relationships, conflict resolution, and self-understanding. You create a visual map of what someone thinks, feels, says, does, fears, and hopes — revealing gaps between surface behavior and underlying experience.

How do you do Empathy Mapping Exercise?
- 1.Choose a specific person and a specific situation where you want to understand them better. Draw a simple quadrant: THINKS (internal monologue), FEELS (emotions), SAYS (actual words spoken), DOES (observable behaviors). Fill in each quadrant from their perspective, not yours.
- 2.Add two additional sections: PAINS (fears, frustrations, obstacles they face) and GAINS (hopes, desires, what success looks like to them). This forces you beyond surface-level empathy into genuine perspective-taking about what drives and blocks them.
- 3.Notice the gaps between quadrants — the most revealing insights live in contradictions. Someone who SAYS 'I'm fine' but DOES withdraw from social activities and FEELS lonely reveals the gap between their public face and private experience. These gaps are where compassion enters.
- 4.Use empathy maps before difficult conversations: map the other person's likely THINKS/FEELS/SAYS/DOES landscape. This preparation transforms you from an adversary into someone genuinely trying to understand. You'll enter the conversation with better questions, softer tone, and more patience.
- 5.Practice self-empathy mapping weekly: turn the map on yourself. What am I THINKING vs. SAYING? What am I DOING vs. what I FEEL? This builds emotional self-awareness and often reveals where you're out of alignment — the places where your behavior doesn't match your values.
How long does it take?
15-20 minutes per mapping exercise.
