Plant-Slant Diet

What is Plant-Slant Diet?

The Blue Zones dietary framework: 95% plant-based eating emphasizing beans, greens, whole grains, nuts, and fruits. Centenarians across all five Blue Zones eat meat only about 5 times per month (2 oz or less), with beans as the cornerstone protein source. This is not strict veganism but a plant-dominant approach with minimal animal products.

Is there evidence for it?

EVIDENCEstrong — epidemiological data from 5 Blue Zones populations with centenarian-level longevity; linked to reduced cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and dementia

How do you do Plant-Slant Diet?

  1. 1.Make beans the centerpiece of meals: aim for at least 1 cup (half-cup cooked) daily — black beans, lentils, chickpeas, fava beans
  2. 2.Fill 50% of every plate with vegetables, prioritizing leafy greens (spinach, kale, chard, collards) and sweet potatoes/yams
  3. 3.Limit meat to 2 oz portions no more than 5 times per month; if eating fish, keep to 3 oz up to 3 times per week
  4. 4.Snack on nuts daily (1-2 handfuls), slash added sugar to under 28g/day, and drink mostly water
  5. 5.Replace dairy with plant alternatives; use extra-firm tofu as primary protein substitute (as Okinawans do)

How long does it take?

30-60 min/day for meal preparation.

Is it hard to start?

moderate.
