Natural Movement Integration

What is Natural Movement Integration?
Blue Zone centenarians don't go to gyms or run marathons. They live in environments that constantly nudge them into moving: gardening, walking everywhere, manual house and yard work, and using no mechanical conveniences. Gardening involves repeated bending, crouching, squatting, and getting back up — essentially functional strength training without equipment.
Is there evidence for it?
EVIDENCEstrong — walking decreases risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, cognitive impairment, and dementia while improving mental well-being, sleep, and longevity (GeroScience meta-analysis)
How do you do Natural Movement Integration?
- 1.Walk for all errands within 1 mile; aim for 5,000-10,000 steps/day through daily activities, not dedicated 'exercise'
- 2.Start or maintain a garden — even a balcony container garden; gardening involves squatting, bending, carrying, and digging
- 3.Eliminate one mechanical convenience per month: use a push mower, hand-wash some dishes, take stairs instead of elevator
- 4.Do housework manually and vigorously — sweeping, mopping, scrubbing are full-body movements
- 5.Walk or bike to social engagements; design your environment so movement is the default, not the exception
How long does it take?
Integrated throughout the day — no dedicated time needed.
Is it hard to start?
easy.
