Movement Snacks

Movement · easy · 5 min every 30 min during sedentary hours (~40-60 min total across a workday)

What is Movement Snacks?

Sitting uninterrupted for 60-90 minutes nearly doubles early mortality risk. The optimal antidote: 5 minutes of walking every 30 minutes, which reduces blood sugar spikes by 58% and significantly lowers blood pressure. A Columbia University study found this is the minimum effective dose. Even 2 minutes of movement every 30 minutes provides substantial benefit. These 'movement snacks' are as important as formal exercise.

Is there evidence for it?

EVIDENCEstrong — Columbia University study: 5-min walk every 30 min = 58% reduction in post-meal glucose spikes; US cohort of 8,000 adults: movement breaks every 30 min significantly reduced early mortality vs. uninterrupted sitting; 2-min breaks reduce glycemic/triglyceride responses in T2D patients

How do you do Movement Snacks?

  1. 1.Set a timer for every 30 minutes during sedentary work; stand and walk for 5 minutes each time (the proven optimal dose)
  2. 2.If 5 min/30 min is impractical, do at minimum 2-3 minutes of any large-muscle movement: squats, calf raises, stair climbing, or walking
  3. 3.Keep resistance bands, a kettlebell, or pull-up bar accessible at your desk for quick movement snacks: 10 squats, 5 push-ups, or a 30-second plank
  4. 4.After any meal, take a 10-minute walk — this is one of the most effective single interventions for glucose management
  5. 5.Redesign your workspace to force movement: standing desk, walking meetings, printer on another floor, bathroom on a different level

How long does it take?
