What is Emotional Health as Longevity Medicine?
Peter Attia's 'Medicine 3.0' framework includes emotional health as one of five core domains alongside exercise, nutrition, sleep, and supplementation. In Outlive, he argues that striving for physical longevity while ignoring emotional health is 'the ultimate curse.' Emotional health encompasses happiness, sense of purpose, and quality of relationships — and its neglect accelerates biological aging through chronic stress and social isolation.
Is there evidence for it?
EVIDENCEstrong — chronic stress and loneliness are associated with shortened telomeres, elevated inflammatory markers, and increased all-cause mortality; therapeutic intervention shown to reduce cortisol and improve cardiovascular markers
How do you do Emotional Health as Longevity Medicine?
- 1.Work with a therapist or counselor regularly (weekly or biweekly) — treat it like a training session, not a crisis response
- 2.Practice daily self-reflection: 10 minutes of journaling about emotions, triggers, and relationship dynamics
- 3.Audit your relationships quarterly: identify which relationships energize you and which drain you; invest in the former, set boundaries with the latter
- 4.Develop mindfulness or meditation practice: start with 10 min/day of breath-focused meditation to build emotional regulation capacity
- 5.Address unresolved trauma and attachment patterns — these are invisible accelerators of biological aging through chronic cortisol elevation
