What is Dopamine Baseline Reset?
Andrew Huberman's protocol for resetting dopamine to healthy baseline levels. Rather than eliminating dopamine, the goal is to reduce dependence on high-dopamine activities (social media, gaming, porn, junk food) so that everyday activities become rewarding again. Based on neuroscience of dopamine receptor upregulation through strategic abstinence and low-dopamine replacement activities.
Is there evidence for it?

How do you do Dopamine Baseline Reset?
- 1.Commit to 30 days of complete abstinence from your top 3 high-dopamine behaviors (social media, video games, porn, processed food, etc.) — identify which specific activities have become compulsive
- 2.Replace dopamine-spiking activities with sustainable baseline-elevating ones: cold water exposure (11 minutes total per week across 2-4 sessions), morning sunlight (10 min within first hour of waking), and vigorous exercise (zone 2 cardio or resistance training)
- 3.Randomize reward conditions to prevent new dependencies — vary workout music, locations, pre-workout routines. Never stack multiple dopamine triggers (e.g., caffeine + music + social validation) on the same activity
- 4.Prioritize sleep hygiene as the primary dopamine restoration mechanism: consistent sleep/wake times, no screens 1 hour before bed, room temperature 65-68°F, use Non-Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR/Yoga Nidra) protocols for 10-20 min when tired
- 5.After 30 days, reintroduce one behavior at a time with strict boundaries (e.g., 30 min social media only after completing a meaningful task). Monitor whether baseline motivation and enjoyment of mundane tasks has improved
How long does it take?
30 days minimum, ongoing practice.
Is it hard to start?
hard.
