Nasal Breathing Training

What is Nasal Breathing Training?
Train yourself to breathe through your nose 24/7 — during exercise, sleep, and daily life. Nasal breathing filters, warms, and humidifies air, produces nitric oxide (vasodilator), and activates the parasympathetic nervous system. Mouth breathing does none of this.
Is there evidence for it?
EVIDENCEmoderate
How do you do Nasal Breathing Training?
- 1.Awareness first: notice how often you breathe through your mouth. Most people mouth-breathe during exercise, stress, sleep, and concentration
- 2.During the day: close your mouth and breathe through your nose. When you notice your mouth open, close it. Set hourly phone reminders for the first week
- 3.During exercise: start with easy workouts (walking, light jogging) with mouth closed. It feels suffocating at first — your body adapts in 2-3 weeks as your CO2 tolerance improves
- 4.During sleep: use mouth tape (3M Micropore tape or specialized sleep tape) to keep mouth closed. Start with a small strip while awake to get comfortable
- 5.Advanced: practice reduced breathing (Buteyko method): breathe less than you want to, creating a slight air hunger. This increases CO2 tolerance and shifts your breathing permanently
How long does it take?
Ongoing awareness — no extra time.
Is it hard to start?
medium.
