What is Career Capital Framework?

Stop following your passion — build rare, valuable skills first, then passion follows. Cal Newport's research shows that people who love their work got there by becoming excellent, not by finding a pre-existing passion. Skill first, love later.

Is there evidence for it?

How do you do Career Capital Framework?

  1. 1.Identify what's valuable in your field: what skills command the highest pay, respect, and autonomy? Talk to 3-5 people 5-10 years ahead of you
  2. 2.Pick ONE skill to develop deliberately. Not 3, not 5 — one. Go deep. Spend 1 hour daily in deliberate practice (not just doing your job, but pushing beyond your comfort zone)
  3. 3.Track your progress: hours of deliberate practice per week, measurable skill improvement, feedback from mentors or peers
  4. 4.After 6-12 months of skill-building, you'll have leverage. Use it to negotiate for: more autonomy, creative control, flexible hours, or a better role. This is how great careers are built
  5. 5.The test: would someone pay you top dollar for this skill? If not yet, you don't have enough career capital. Keep building
