The Stranger Exercise (Social Confidence)

confidence · medium · 2-5 minutes per day

What is The Stranger Exercise (Social Confidence)?

Talk to one stranger every day for 30 days. Not pickup lines — genuine human interaction. Ask for directions, compliment their dog, chat with the barista. Social anxiety is a skill deficit, not a personality trait. Like any skill, it improves with daily practice.

How do you do The Stranger Exercise (Social Confidence)?

  1. 1.Day 1-7: low-stakes interactions only. Ask a stranger for the time, compliment someone's shirt, ask a shop worker for a recommendation. Just break the ice of talking to unknowns
  2. 2.Day 8-14: extend the interaction. After the initial question, add a follow-up: 'Cool watch — is that vintage?' or 'I'm new here, what else do you recommend in this area?'
  3. 3.Day 15-21: initiate conversations with no excuse. Sit next to someone at a coffee shop and say 'I'm trying to talk to more strangers this month — what's the most interesting thing that happened to you today?'
  4. 4.Day 22-30: challenge mode. Ask for something slightly uncomfortable: a discount, a favor, someone's number (platonically), or start a conversation in an elevator. Notice: the fear decreases with every rep
  5. 5.Track your streak. Most people find that by day 10, the anxiety has dropped 70%+. By day 30, talking to strangers feels natural. The skill transfers to networking, dating, interviews, and every social situation

How long does it take?

2-5 minutes per day.

Is it hard to start?

medium.
