The Mood Meter (Emotional Granularity)

emotional · easy · 1 minute, 3x per day

What is The Mood Meter (Emotional Granularity)?

Track your emotions on a 2-axis grid: energy (high/low) on Y-axis, pleasantness (unpleasant/pleasant) on X-axis. Check in 3x daily. Most people only recognize 'good', 'bad', or 'fine.' This builds emotional granularity — the ability to name and distinguish subtle emotions, which dramatically improves self-regulation.

How do you do The Mood Meter (Emotional Granularity)?

  1. 1.Draw or print a 2x2 grid. Y-axis: energy (high to low). X-axis: feeling (unpleasant to pleasant). This creates 4 quadrants: high energy + pleasant (joyful, excited), high energy + unpleasant (anxious, angry), low energy + pleasant (calm, content), low energy + unpleasant (sad, bored)
  2. 2.3x daily (morning, midday, evening): plot your current emotion on the grid. Then NAME it specifically: not just 'bad' but 'frustrated because my project stalled'
  3. 3.Build your vocabulary: replace 'fine' with nuanced words: content, satisfied, mellow, neutral, restless, drained, nostalgic, eager, wistful, irritated, inspired
  4. 4.After 2 weeks of tracking: patterns emerge. You'll notice what activities, people, and times of day push you into each quadrant. This is actionable intelligence for designing a better life
  5. 5.Research (Lisa Feldman Barrett): people with higher emotional granularity are less likely to react destructively, more likely to choose effective coping strategies, and recover from stress faster

How long does it take?

1 minute, 3x per day.

Is it hard to start?

easy.
