Emergency Fund Ladder

What is Emergency Fund Ladder?

Build your financial safety net in three tiers: Tier 1 is $1,000 fast (covers minor emergencies), Tier 2 is 1-2 months expenses in a high-yield savings account, Tier 3 is 3-6 months in a mix of HYSA and short-term CDs. The tiered approach makes a daunting goal feel achievable and optimizes for both access and returns.

How do you do Emergency Fund Ladder?

  1. 1.Tier 1: Save $1,000 as fast as possible — sell stuff, pick up extra work, cut all extras
  2. 2.Tier 2: Build to 1-2 months expenses in a high-yield savings account (separate from checking)
  3. 3.Tier 3: Add 2-4 more months, split between HYSA (instant access) and a CD ladder (higher yields)
  4. 4.For the CD ladder: buy 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month CDs so one matures each quarter
  5. 5.Once fully funded, redirect savings energy to investing — don't let the fund grow beyond 6 months

How long does it take?

1 hour setup, automated contributions ongoing.

Is it hard to start?
