What is Gottman Emotion Coaching (5 Steps)?

John Gottman's research found that children whose parents practice 'emotion coaching' — treating emotional moments as teaching opportunities rather than problems to fix — have better emotional regulation, higher academic achievement, fewer behavioral problems, and even better physical health. The approach centers on validation first, problem-solving second. Emotion-coached children learn to understand and manage their feelings rather than suppress or act out.

How do you do Gottman Emotion Coaching (5 Steps)?

  1. 1.Step 1 — Notice: become aware of lower-intensity emotions before they escalate (the child seems frustrated, not yet in a tantrum)
  2. 2.Step 2 — Connect: see this as a bonding and teaching opportunity, not a hassle ('Great, a chance to help them learn')
  3. 3.Step 3 — Listen: get on their physical level, make eye contact, and reflect what you hear: 'You seem really frustrated that the tower fell down'
  4. 4.Step 4 — Name: help them label the emotion: 'That feeling is called frustration. It happens when something doesn't go the way we wanted'
  5. 5.Step 5 — Limit & solve: set behavioral limits ('It's okay to be frustrated, it's not okay to throw blocks') then problem-solve together ('What could we do differently?')

How long does it take?
