Breathwork for HRV (Resonance Frequency Protocol)

Health Optimization · easy · 10-20 minutes/day

What is Breathwork for HRV (Resonance Frequency Protocol)?

A structured breathing protocol that trains your heart rate variability (HRV) — a key biomarker of nervous system resilience and overall health. By breathing at your personal resonance frequency (typically around 5.5 breaths per minute, or a 5-second inhale followed by a 5-second exhale), you maximize the amplitude of your heart rate oscillations, strengthening the vagal tone and improving your stress resilience, emotional regulation, and cardiovascular health.

How do you do Breathwork for HRV (Resonance Frequency Protocol)?

  1. 1.Find your resonance frequency: start with a 5:5 breathing pattern (5-second inhale, 5-second exhale = 6 breaths/minute) and adjust by half-second increments until it feels most natural and smooth
  2. 2.Practice for 10-20 minutes daily using an HRV biofeedback app (Elite HRV, Welltory, or HeartMath) or simply a breathing timer
  3. 3.Breathe through the nose, with the exhale slightly longer than the inhale (e.g., 4:6 ratio) for enhanced parasympathetic activation
  4. 4.Track your resting HRV weekly (measure first thing in the morning before getting out of bed) to observe improvement over 4-8 weeks
  5. 5.Use resonance breathing as a real-time stress tool: before difficult conversations, during commutes, or when you notice anxiety rising

How long does it take?
