Plutchik's Wheel of Emotions Practice
Emotional Intelligence · easy · 5-10 minutes/day across 3 check-ins
What is Plutchik's Wheel of Emotions Practice?
A daily practice using psychologist Robert Plutchik's Wheel of Emotions as a visual tool for developing emotional literacy. The wheel maps eight primary emotions (joy, trust, fear, surprise, sadness, disgust, anger, anticipation), their varying intensities, and how they combine into complex emotional states. By referencing the wheel during emotional moments, you build the neural pathways for precise emotion identification — the foundation of all emotional intelligence.

How do you do Plutchik's Wheel of Emotions Practice?
- 1.Print or save Plutchik's Wheel of Emotions on your phone and keep it easily accessible throughout the day
- 2.Three times daily (morning, midday, evening), pause and locate your current emotional state on the wheel — identify the primary emotion and its intensity level
- 3.When experiencing a strong emotion, use the wheel to distinguish between similar feelings: is it annoyance, anger, or rage? Is it apprehension, fear, or terror?
- 4.Notice compound emotions on the wheel's outer edges: 'awe' = surprise + fear; 'contempt' = anger + disgust; 'love' = joy + trust
- 5.Journal weekly about patterns: which emotions dominate your week? Which are absent? What triggers the intense versions?
