RAIN Meditation (Tara Brach Method)
Emotional Intelligence · medium · 10 minutes formal practice + brief real-time applications
What is RAIN Meditation (Tara Brach Method)?
A four-step applied mindfulness practice popularized by meditation teacher Tara Brach for working with difficult emotions in real time. RAIN stands for Recognize what is happening, Allow the experience to be there, Investigate with interest and care, and Nurture with self-compassion. Unlike basic meditation which observes experience passively, RAIN actively engages with difficult emotions, preventing them from driving unconscious reactive behavior while building self-compassion.

How do you do RAIN Meditation (Tara Brach Method)?
- 1.RECOGNIZE: When you notice emotional distress, pause and name what's happening — 'I notice anxiety arising' or 'There's shame here'
- 2.ALLOW: Let the emotion exist without trying to fix, suppress, or amplify it — say to yourself 'This belongs' or 'I can be with this'
- 3.INVESTIGATE: With gentle curiosity, explore where the emotion lives in your body — tightness in chest? Heat in face? What is this feeling really about?
- 4.NURTURE: Offer yourself kindness — place a hand on your heart and say what you'd say to a friend: 'It's okay, this is hard, and I'm here for you'
- 5.Practice RAIN as a 10-minute formal meditation daily, and use the abbreviated version (30-60 seconds) whenever difficult emotions arise in real life
