Parts Work (IFS Self-Therapy Lite)
Emotional Intelligence · medium · 10-15 minutes per session; practice 3-4 times/week or in real-time during emotional triggers
What is Parts Work (IFS Self-Therapy Lite)?
A simplified self-therapy approach based on Richard Schwartz's Internal Family Systems (IFS) model, which views the mind as containing multiple 'parts' — each with their own feelings, perspectives, and motivations — organized around a core Self that is inherently compassionate and calm. When you feel internal conflict ('Part of me wants to speak up, but another part is terrified'), IFS gives you a way to dialogue with these parts, understand their protective intentions, and lead from your calm core Self.

How do you do Parts Work (IFS Self-Therapy Lite)?
- 1.When you notice conflicting feelings or an intense emotional reaction, pause and ask: 'What part of me is activated right now?'
- 2.Identify the part and give it a name or description ('the inner critic,' 'the anxious planner,' 'the people-pleaser') — notice where you feel it in your body
- 3.From a place of curiosity (not judgment), ask the part: 'What are you trying to protect me from? What are you afraid would happen if you didn't do your job?'
- 4.Acknowledge the part's positive intention: 'Thank you for trying to keep me safe. I see that you've been working hard'
- 5.Ask the part: 'What do you need from me right now?' and listen — often parts just need to be acknowledged and reassured that you (the Self) are in charge
