Body Scan Meditation (MBSR Protocol)

What is Body Scan Meditation (MBSR Protocol)?
A systematic attention practice from Jon Kabat-Zinn's Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program where you slowly scan attention through every region of the body from toes to crown, observing physical sensations without trying to change them. The practice develops interoception — the ability to sense your body's internal signals — which research shows is directly correlated with emotional intelligence. People who can feel their bodies more clearly also identify and regulate emotions more effectively.

How do you do Body Scan Meditation (MBSR Protocol)?
- 1.Lie down in a comfortable position, close your eyes, and take 3-5 deep breaths to settle
- 2.Begin directing attention to your left toes — notice any sensations (tingling, warmth, pressure, numbness, nothing) without judgment
- 3.Slowly move attention through the left foot, ankle, calf, knee, thigh, then repeat for the right leg
- 4.Continue through the pelvis, abdomen, chest, hands, arms, shoulders, neck, face, and crown — spending 1-2 minutes per region
- 5.Practice for 20-45 minutes daily for 8 weeks (the standard MBSR protocol); benefits emerge after 2-3 weeks of consistent practice
