Niksen (Dutch Art of Doing Nothing)

What is Niksen (Dutch Art of Doing Nothing)?
The Dutch practice of intentional idleness — doing nothing purposeful without guilt. Unlike mindfulness meditation, niksen involves mindless relaxation. Research from a Dutch coaching center shows decreased stress and increased happiness, while neuroscience links idle time to activation of creativity centers in the brain.

How do you do Niksen (Dutch Art of Doing Nothing)?
- 1.Start with 10 minutes daily of deliberate nothing: sit by a window, look at the sky, listen to ambient sounds — no phone, no book, no podcast, no agenda
- 2.Resist the urge to optimize idle time — niksen is NOT meditation, NOT journaling, NOT 'productive rest.' It is genuinely purposeless
- 3.Schedule niksen like an appointment: block 'nothing time' in your calendar to protect it from the guilt of productivity culture
- 4.Try different niksen modes: staring out a window, sitting in a park, lying on the floor listening to background sounds, watching clouds or water
- 5.Balance niksen with activity — research warns that too much mind-wandering can lead to rumination; 10-30 minutes of intentional nothing is the sweet spot
How long does it take?
10-30 minutes daily.
Is it hard to start?
easy.
